Happy New Year 2012

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Thank the good Lord that we’re starting a new Year of Our Lord Two-thousand, Twelve.  Or more curtly, 2012 AD, anno domini.

I can’t wait for the new year.  The most charitable thing I can think to say about this year just past is that at least it wasn’t 2008 or 1932, although the jury may still be out on a future 1932-like performance.  I don’t think 2012 will happen the way 1932 did.  I think the market tickers for the first part of 2012 are going to look the same as all 2011.  But what good news can there be that would overcome the systemic geopolitical and economic issues facing the Western world?   I can think of a few, and the exact things I’m thinking belong in the realm where the ’Frosty Beverage Light’ is always on, not here on the blog; I doubt these things will come to pass in any case and will be rendered moot.  We shall see.

For this evening I’ll count the many blessings granted me this past year and I will wish your 2012 has even more blessings than my 2011 had.

Good News and Bad News

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

I did a Google search for death penalty sentences on 23 Jan 2008 and there didn’t appear to be any judicial activity from most of the usual suspects (China, Iran, Texas).  Nor had anybody in the world appeared to have been found guilty of heresy or blasphamy against Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Confucians, or most of the major and minor world religions.

On the other hand, there was this:  Afghan journalist gets death for insulting Islam.

Merry Christmas 2007

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

May everyone in all the world experience the peace and joy of the season, even if only for a few moments.

Please keep the folks who are downrange in your thoughts and prayers!

Let’s all keep in mind "The Reason for the Season":  This is the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!  May He give us the wisdom and patience to keep hope alive in the world so we can feed the hungry, ease the burden of the afflicted, shelter those with no roof above them but the heavens, and convince mankind to be kind to his fellow man.

The Blog Goes Ever On

Holy Silmarillion, Batman! A fellow Tolkien buff, and with a blog!

And she made LGF and Patterico before I did (not to mention HoyStory).

Among Other Things That Never Occurred To Me

My buddy Matt dug this gem up:  The Islamopiscopal.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:  YGBSM!

More Good Stuff from VDH

If you’re not regularly reading Victor Davis Hanson, you’re letting some of the best commentary on the War on Terror pass by.  If you disagree with him, at least he makes you think.

Here’s some good thinking to get your 2007 underway.

After the Mount Soledad Cross

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

   When I die,
I want a cross marking my grave.  I want
everyone to see the symbol of my Lord and know that there is little else I want
people to remember about me than that I was a Christian.

     If any
atheists don’t like it and attempt to make future generations take down my
cross, I hope some good folks will refuse and ensure it remains standing.I hope that the democracy I will have spent
the best part of my life protecting will honor my eternal vote to display the
fact I was a Christian during my life here on earth.

    I also
harbor a guilty hope that the good folks will tell the atheists where to go,
both figuratively and literally.

Osama bin Laden’s Latest Diatribe

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

I understand the demon djinn just released a new audio tape.  Apparently his current cave (or equivalent primitive dwelling) doesn’t sport rudimentary video facilities.

He called for a Muslim boycott of American goods.  Let’s see, a short list of American exports could consist of food, airplanes, medical technology, computer operating systems, and Hollywood movies.  A Muslim boycott of food? Good luck growing your own out there in the desert, fellas!  A Muslim boycott of airplanes or airlines? I’m thinking I don’t even need to touch that one.  A Muslim boycott of medical technology? Hey! Who am I to stop you from wanting to keep living in the 18th century? A Muslim boycott of Windows, Mac OS, Unix, and various strains of Linux? That’s okay, you can depend on Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese goods if you like to get your messages out on the Internet and television.  They’re all good allies of ours, we don’t mind if you make them richer, as we can buy stock in their companies and keep our 401(k)  portfolios afloat.  A Muslim boycott of Hollywood movies? That hardly matters, as Muslim countries are as bad as China when it comes to bootlegging movies and DVDs.  Overall, a general Muslim boycott of American goods would be a Pyrrhic victory for you.

Osama, you may boycott away! It’s not like you were having much success getting anywhere you could access American goods anyway, and that makes me happy.  I don’t want you putting your filthy paws on anything made by people who are far better than you.

It’s a Good Thing!

Abdul Rahman, the Afghani who was recently facing the death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity, has been temporarily spared (here’s a link to the story on FoxNews.com).  The case against him was dismissed.  The problem is, he’s still in a country where there are a lot of people out to see the death sentence carried out, regardless of the status of the court case.

Hopefully, if Rahman decides to try to continue living in Afghanistan, he’ll be left alone.   I rather expect he’ll have to relocate to a non-muslim country, rather like one Mr. Rushdie.
